What are free radicals and what damage does it cause?

Free radicals are naturally occurring compounds that are both produced by our bodies and externally via factors like pollution such as cigarette smoke, dust, smog, pesticides, alcohol, industrial chemicals, high blood sugar levels, radiation or household cleaning products.

Apart from those mentioned above, free radicals can also come from UV rays and exposure, which makes avoiding them completely a tough challenge. Constantly being stressed, having inflamed skin, or having an infection can also result in free radicals.

When it accumulates in a large number, it may result in oxidative stress. This means that there is an imbalance in free radicals and antioxidants, which is the key to neutralising them.

Extent of damage free radicals can cause

As a result of oxidative stress, it can lead to physical issues such as inflammatory conditions like arthritis, high blood pressure and diabetes.

With regards to skin related issues, oxidative stress can cause concerns such as hyperpigmentation, breakouts, fine lines, wrinkles and premature ageing, as free radicals can damage and breakdown DNA of the skin.

That being said, free radicals are only harmful when accumulated in a large number. As they are almost unavoidable, it is essentially impossible to eliminate every one of them.

However, there are some ways that you can mitigate its damage, with the main solution being piling up on the antioxidants both internally and externally.
